Transport and disposal for the start of recovery processes of
Mercury "neon type" lights

In Italy it is estimated that around 100 million neon lights are produced each year. Their widespread use in our country and also their regulatory classification as special hazardous waste makes it essential to respect the rules for proper disposal and, therefore, recycling.

Remember that fluorescent lights, often called neon or low consumption lights, must be recovered properly because they contain dangerous substances such as mercury and should therefore be treated appropriately and handled with care.

How does our disposal service work?

The neon collection and recovery service includes the collection of fluorescent tubes and low energy consumption lamps via the NEON ESObox.

The container dedicated to collection allows, thanks to its telescope structure, the insertion of neon lamps of any size in the same box. Special perforated cardboard supports protect the lamps during transport to prevent damage and breakage.

When the ESObox is filled, ESO takes care of the collection through the express service (EXP) or through the programmed service (PROG): specialised personnel will carry out the withdrawal, positioning an empty ESObox for the new collection.

The regulations

The environmental regulations contained in Italian Legislative Decree 152/2006 classify both neon lights and tubes as hazardous special waste. Pursuant to Italian Legislative Decree 152/2006, neon lights and tubes, considered to be special hazardous waste, are not subject to the same regime that applies to municipal waste.

Our service complies with the requirements of Italian Legislative Decree 49 of 2014 on the separate collection and recovery of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE).

The environment

Neon lights contain mercury, a highly toxic and dangerous metal if dispersed into the environment. The quantity present in neon tubes or lights is relatively small but sufficient to require a certain degree of caution. This means that waste included in this category is subject to special rules to avoid any damage to people or the environment.
